Agassi Sues, Serena Scratches, and Roger Needs a Geography Lesson

Sania and Mahesh barge in

  • Kitty Likes to Scratch: According to the current issue of People, Serena Williams’ free association answer to the question ‘name something overrated’ was “Maria Sharapova“. MeOW. [Via Chicago Sun-Times]
  • Andre Agassi is suing the Minneapolis-based retail chain Target for using his name on more than 52,500 pairs of sandals. The suit does not include a provision begging the obvious question, “Who the f*ck would buy an Agassi sandal?” [The Star]
  • Roger Federer has arrived in Prague for Davis Cup and plans on checking out the Prague Castle today …in case you’re in Prague and interested in Czeching him out for yourself. [ABC Prague]
  • The Masters Cup has commissioned French artist Laury Dizengremel to sculpt the likenesses of the top 8 players in the style of the Terracotta Warriors of Xi’an. Next up: London! [Masters Cup]

  • How much would you pay to watch Kim Clijsters miscarry in an exhibition match in Luxembourg on the 23rd? How about 10 Euros? [Fortis Championships]
  • Video: Roger Federer seems to be totally unaware that the Great Wall and the Forbidden City are in/around Beijing, not Shanghai. (Hey, at least he got the country right.) [Masters Cup Video]
  • Chinese tennis star Zheng Jie was named the poster child of gender equality as part of the WTA’s partnership with UNESCO. Fortunately the PRC doesn’t take the whole one-child gender ratio thing too seriously (especially in tennis). [ChinaCSR]
  • Spotted: Serena at the premiere of pal Jamie Foxx’s new flick, The Kingdom, at Mann’s Village Theater in LA last night. [OTB News]
  • How many people think the ATP should launch an investigation into how Andy Murray won the inaugural Betfair Turbo Tennis tournament on Saturday? (Bad editor, bad.) [OTB News]
  • News of the Obvious: The WTA announces that eight players who don’t make it into the Year End Championships get to go to Bali. …Boo hoo. What a pity. [DPA]
  • Interesting Read: Up-and-comer Andrew Thomas is caught in the crosshairs of international tennis. [Cyprus Mail]
  • The Thailand Open will be using Miss Thailand World beauty pageant as ball girls for some of the matches. (No, Paradorn Srichapan’s fiance will not be one of them, sorry.) [The Nation]
  • A crowd of 3,000 attended an exhibition match between Monica Seles and Martina Navratilova on Friday at the New Orleans Arena, which raised money for the American Cancer Society, the New Orleans Recreation Department and New Orleans Recovery School District. They also played an exhibition at The Romanian Open in Bucharest on Sunday. Seles won both matches. [NO Times-Picayune]
  • Besides doing exhibitions, Seles is also writing a book on fitness. Gee, wonder where she got that idea? [OTB News]
  • The retiring Anna Smashnova was honored by Israeli female tennis players from past and present on Monday night in an evening organized by the Israel Tennis Center at the Tel Aviv-Jaffa tennis center. Smashnova, who won 12 WTA titles during her career, played her last match at this year’s Wimbledon; but is best known for having the coolest name ever to grace our sport. [JPost]
  • The LTA will not be selling grounds passes so fans can watch Tim Henman’s final Davis Cup appearance from Henman Hill… because that would clearly be a good thing and is thus deemed unnecessary. [Guardian Unlimited]
  • News of the Obvious: Judy Murray is so over tennis that she’s moved on to ping pong. [Scotsman]
  • Don’t most people announce their website relaunch when they actually do it? Yes, they’re off to an auspicious start. [Tennis Week]
  • Found art: The Chinese cheer tennis, on court. [AFP]
  • OTB Video o’ the Day: Best. ball. machine. ever. [YouTube]
  • Pic o’ the Day: Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi play an exhibition match on a barge across the Hooghly river in Kolkata, India, while people shout from the water, “Do you mind? I’m trying to bathe here.” [Reuters/Parth Sanyal]

Unfair!! I don’t think Roger was mistaking where the stuff is as much as he was just randomly taken out of context.

Which is probably a bigger problem and I wonder what they were thinking when they made that video!

I cannot believe Clijsters is going to play an exhibition. How far along is she???

I think it’s like 5 months. Btw I just heard that she’s having a girl. :P

Clearly Lynn has been to India. LOL

Yep. I’ve been to India. Loved it! :)

Wow. 5 months? Has it been that long? Anyway, yes, I heard she was expecting a girl too. Good for her I say, and I’m sure she’ll take it easy during the exo. Though if I were 5 months pregnant I’d be on my arse eating bon bons and having someone massage my feet. (Not that that’s different now honestly)

Claire, your love and unwavering defense of Roger is scary at times.
